I am a bit of a motivational geek, I love finding ways to understand how people tick, why they make the decisions that they do and why they express the emotions that they do. My belief is that to some degree if I can understand this then I can understand my own behaviours better to help me identify my own areas of weakness. A concept with many flaws, but for now I’ll take it. I study articles, listen to podcasts and dive into social media streams with an aim to discover the trends and criteria for “success”. Success and Successfulness is entirely objective and no words (despite many people trying) could provide a finite recipe for it. What are a constant however with those who achieve success, no matter how great or small is a combination of 3 variables; Time, Routine and Imagination.
The product of these three criteria is a long term end state and what I use to take me away from the dangers of short sightedness. In a time where we face restrictions (quite rightly) on the majority of our daily lives, now more than ever do we need to seek out a longer term outlook and now more than ever do we have the opportunity to do so. The dangers of looking inward day after day, consuming both social and mainstream media headlines will achieve limited upside beyond the instant gratification we so often seek.
There is no doubt that the challenge we face as a race is great and this commentary is not geared to trivialise the pandemic in any way nor those who have been impacted by the economic restrictions, however many of us are seeking the opportunities through the common situation that we all find ourself in. Whether its reconnecting with loved ones or engaging with a new film series, adjustments are being made to make the best of the situation that we are in. For me I see an opportunity to revise the imagination that demands a new routine that takes advantage of the restricted time period which quite frankly we cannot predict nor control. With the restrictions comes predictability through the certainty of limited distractions and a clear route to build your own schedule. The perfect time to establish consistency towards that full body work out, coding course or cookery class. Technology provides a wealth of content that we can all access and ultimately become anything we want to. Many people say that it takes 21 days to establish a habit…you now have those days on a plate.
